Abstract
Cilj ove radnje jest analizirati temu kolonijalizma u Srcu tame Josepha Conrada usredotočujući se na proces sazrijevanja i razvoja glavnoga lika. Tvrdim da je taj proces utemeljen na Marlowoj ideološkoj transformaciji koja podrazumijeva prijelaz od njegova prihvaćanja ideologije imperijalizma do njegova odmaka od nje. Također analiziram Marlowo poimanje Afrike u djelu, a moja je temeljna teza da to poimanje reflektira njegovu ideološku transformaciju. Moja se analiza oslanja na Edward Saidovu definiciju pojmova ‘kolonijalizam’, ‘imperijalizam’, ‘anti-imperijalizam’ te ‘Orijent’ koje analizira u svojim ključnim djelima Orijentalizam i Kultura i imperijalizam kao temeljnim teorijskim tekstovima Postkolonijalizma.
Abstract (english)
The aim of this thesis is to explore the theme of colonialism in Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness by focusing on Marlow’s process of maturation and development. I argue that Marlow’s personal maturation and development revolves around his ideological transformation which implies his passage from his adherence to the ideology of imperialism to his rejection of it. I also explore Marlow’s perception of Africa and contend that it parallels and reflects his ideological transformation. My analysis draws on Edward Said’s notions of ‘colonialism’, ‘imperialism’ and ‘anti-imperialism’, and of the Orient as developed in his seminal works Orientalism and Culture and Imperialism as two milestones of Post-colonial theory.
