Abstract
Sv. Benedikt, osnivač benediktinskog reda, ostavio je velik utjecaj na zapadnu kršćansku kulturu. Monasi koji su slijedili njegovo učenje, djelovali su i na području današnje Hrvatske uživajući velik ugled i poštovanje. Jedan od samostana koji su benediktinci podignuli na području Hrvatske je samostan na Sustipanu koji se prvi put spominje u dokumentu iz 1020. godine. Mnogi izvori i dokumenti govore o djelovanju ovog samostana, a u njima se spominju i hrvatski kraljevi, Petar Krešimir IV. i Stjepan II. Nakon određenog vremena, samostan je počeo propadati. U 19. stoljeću prostor Sustipana prenamijenjen je u izvangradsko groblje s novom crkvom sv. Stjepana na koju su ugrađene neke od spolija sa sustipanskog samostana i crkve. Rušenje groblja polovicom 20. stoljeća otvorilo je put istraživanjima koja su djelomično otkrila gabarite nekadašnjeg samostana i crkve. Pitanje prvobitnog izgleda samostana i pripadajuće crkve donekle je razjašnjeno. Za dataciju crkve postoje dvije glavne teorije, o ranokršćanskoj crkvi i o predromaničkoj crkvi ranokršćanske tipologije.
Abstract (english)
Saint Benedict, the founder of the Benedictine order, made great influence on Western Christian culture. The monks who followed his teaching also set their monasteries in the area of modern Croatia enjoying great reputation and respect. One of the monasteries that Benedictines set up is the monastery at Sustipan, which we learn about for the first time in a document from 1020. Many sources and documents speak of the life of this monastery, and also mention Croatian kings, Petar Krešimir IV and Stjepan II. After a while, the monastery began to decay. In the 19th century, the area of Sustipan had new function as a cemetery with a new church of St. Stephen. The demolition of the cemetery in the middle of the 20th century opened the way for research that partially uncovered the masses of the former monastery and church. The question of the original appearance of the monastery and the accompanying church was somewhat answered. There are two main theories that argue the time origin of the church, the early Christian church and the pre-romanesque church of early Christian typology
