Abstract
The study aims to explore Croatian-English bilingual students’ (N = 133) self-reported frequency of use and perception of offensiveness of L2 English taboo words, taking into consideration the effects of the age of onset of learning, proficiency and general frequency of use of their L2 English. The study also investigates the ways in which perceived emotionality of the L2 affects students’ use of L2 for swearing and their socio-pragmatic awareness of the use of L2 taboo words. The analysis is based on the participants’ responses to an anonymous online questionnaire.
Abstract (croatian)
Cilj je ovog rada istražiti samoprocjene o učestalosti korištenja i percepciji uvredljivosti engleskih tabu izraza u hrvatsko-engleskih dvojezičnih studenata (N = 133), uzimajući u obzir utjecaj početka učenja engleskog jezika te razvijenosti jezičnih vještina i opće učestalosti korištenja drugog jezika. U radu se također analiziraju načini na koji emocionalnost drugog jezika utječe na njegovo korištenje za psovanje kod ispitanika te se ispituje njihova svijest o važnosti sociopragmatičkih faktora pri korištenju engleskih tabu izraza. Podaci su prikupljeni samostalnim ispunjavanjem anonimnog upitnika.
