After a short period of peace, the conflict between England and France escalated again in 1803. Both sides were responsible for the continuation of the conflict. The English violated some of the terms of the Treaty of Amiens and Napoleon continuously expanded his territory, which was not accepted benevolently by other countries. After the ceasefire had ended, Napoleon turned to the construction of a big fleet which he planned to use for invading England. A lot of money and many months were spent on the preparations for the invasion. However, after several postponements Napoleon completely gave up on that idea and turned to the Continent. Most of the country rulers back then shared hatred towards Napoleon and finally in 1805 Austria and Russia started a war against him. Napoleon, along with his army, crossed the Rhein and on 19th October took over the city of Ulm where the Austrian army surrendered without a fight. In the meantime his fleet was heavily defeated at sea by the English in the Battle of Trafalgar. In that clash England's most famous admiral Horatio Nelson lost his life. In the defeat Napoleon lost his plans about supremacy at sea and the invasion of England forever, and England confirmed her status of the most powerful naval force. After Napoleon had entered Munich and Vienna, he moved to the North where Austrian and Russian armies awaited him. He fought them on 2nd December 1805 in the Battle of Austerlitz, which is also known by the name "the Battle of the Three Emperors". Even though the allied troops were superior in number, Napoleon prepared a trap for them and they fell for it. His plan was to weaken the right side of his army ostensibly so that they would attack him right there. When they actually did that, they left their center vulnerable so the French split the allied forces in two with their strong attack and secured the victory for themselves. The Third Coalition against France was put to an end by this defeat. Napoleon made Austria sign an extremely unfavorable agreement in Pressburg by terms of which the Austrians had to pay a big compensation and leave the territory, and he also appointed his brothers to roles of rulers in the Kingdom of Naples and in the Netherlands.
