Abstract
This thesis analyses the ways in which the New Woman Movement of the 1890s is reflected in Bram Stoker’s construction of his female characters in Dracula. It shows that the image of the New Woman is modified and redefined through already existing female tropes which include the Angel in the House, the Fallen Woman and the femme fatale. Thus, it is argued, two versions of the New Woman emerge: an acceptable, “proper”, New Woman who is an educated and competent worker, but also a submissive wifely and/or motherly figure and whose character traits correspond to conservative Victorian notions of female propriety. The other, unacceptable, variant is a sexual New Woman whose interests and aspirations are trivial, indulgence-seeking and, most importantly, whose critique of the Victorian double standard is dismissed and ultimately punished.
Abstract (croatian)
Ovaj završni rad analizira načine na koji je pokret „New Woman“(nove žene) 90-ih godina 19. stoljeća prikazan kroz konstrukciju ženskih likova u Drakuli Brama Stokera. Rad pokazuje kako Stoker izmjenjuje i redefinira prikaz „nove žene“ kroz već postojeće klišejizirane prikaze žena koje uključuju „anđela u kući“ (Angel in the House), posrnulu ženu i fatalnu ženu. Rezultat su, stoga, dvije inačice nove žene: „dolična“ nova žena koja je obrazovana i zaposlena, ali i pokorna figura supruge i/ili majke čija se osobnost podudara s konzervativnim idejama o ženskoj doličnosti viktorijanskog doba. Druga, neprihvatljiva varijanta je putena nova žena čiji su interesi i težnje trivijalni, usredotočeni na užitak i, najvažnije, čiji je zahtjev za dokidanjem dvostrukih seksualnih mjerila za žene odbačen i na kraju kažnjen.
