Abstract
Fluidity and sea imagery prevail in the works of Virginia Woolf, mostly in her novel The Waves. This thesis investigates how Woolf experiments with the concept of fluidity in her novel on the levels of applying symbolical/metaphorical meanings to the sea, transforming structure, narrative and style through the use of various literary devices as well as on the level of describing porous identities of six characters in the novel. The title of the thesis is therefore figurative since the sea (due to Woolf’s internal motivation) is the most common imagery which she utilises in order to convey fluidity. Metaphorically speaking, the sea is inside the writer herself as she refers to consciousness itself in water terminology. Metonymically speaking, the sea (imagery) can be found in Woolf’s works as she employs it to mimic the complexity of fluidity found in both the external world and inner life.
Abstract (english)
Fluidnost i slikoviti prikazi mora prevladavaju u djelima Virginije Woolf, što je najuočljivije u njezinom romanu Valovi. Ovaj rad propituje način na koji Woolf eksperimentira s konceptom fluidnosti u svojem romanu na razinama primjene simboličkih/metaforičnih značenja prikaza mora, preoblike strukture, naracije i stila kroz primjenu različitih stilskih figura te na razini opisa poroznih identiteta šest likova u romanu. Naslov ovog rada stoga je figurativan, s obzirom na to da je slika mora (uslijed unutarnjih motivacija Virginije Woolf) najčešći motiv koji autorica koristi kako bi prikazala fluidnost. Metaforički, more se nalazi unutar autorice budući da ona opisuje svijest koristeći terminologiju vode. Metonimički, more se također nalazi u djelima Virginije Woolf budući da ga koristi kako bi translatirala kompleksnost fluidnosti vanjskog svijeta i unutarnjeg života.
