Abstract
This thesis investigates the media activities in English that Croatian EFL students are engaged in outside the school. The media activities which were investigates include watching films with/without English subtitles, watching movies with Croatian subtitles, using YouTube, playing video games, listening to radio (Spotify, Deezer), online reading, talking via Internet, digital communication etc. The aims of this study were, first, to determine the frequency of student'engagement in out-of-school media activitieas in English; second, to find out which strategies the students use when involved in media activities in English; and third, to investigate the effects of age and gender on the frequency of exposure to English. A total of 104 primary- and secondary-school students participated in the quantitative part of the study. Five students and three teachers were interviewed for the qualitative part. The findings indicate that You8Tube is the most popular media activity in English among all the students, regardless of their age or gender. In addition to this, there were significant differences in the frequency of playing video games between primary- and secondary-school students and between male and female students. Finally, the results show that both students and teachers thought that media had the positive effect on the students' English language learning.
Abstract (croatian)
Ovaj rad obrađuje medijske aktivnosti na engleskom jeziku koje hrvatski učenici engleskoga kao stranog jezika koriste izvan škole. Analizirane medijske aktivnosti uključuju gledanje filmova s/bez titlova na engleskom jeziku, gledanje filmova s hrvatskim titlovima, korištenje YouTube-a, igranje video igrica slušanje glaztbe i radija (Spotfy, Deezer), online čitanje, komuniciranje putem interneta, digitalno komuniciranje itd. Ciljevi istraživanja su, prvo, utvrditi količinu učeničke izloženosti medijskim aktivnostima na engleskom jeziku; drugo, utvrditi koje strategije učenici upotrebljavaju dok koriste medijske aktivnosti na engleskom i treće, istražiti utjecaj dobi i spola učenika na učestalost korištenja medija na engleskom jeziku. Ukupno 104 osnovnoškolaca i srednjoškolaca sudjelovalo je u kvantitativnom dijelu istraživanja. Pet učenica i 3 profesorice sudjelovale su u kvalitativnom dijelu istraživanja. Rezultati pokazuju da je Youtube najpopularnija aktivnost među učenicima, bez obzira na njihovu dob ili spol. Utvrđeno je postojanje značajnih razlika u učestalosti igranja video igrica između osnovnoškolaca i srednjoškolaca te dječaka i djevojčica. Pokazalo se da učenici i učitelji smatraju da izloženost medijima ima pozitivan utjecaj na učenje engleskog jezika.
