Abstract
Although language-learning failure is a frequent phenomenon in the educational context, L2 demotivation is still considered a rather under-researched area. The goal of this thesis was to gain an insight into the demotivating factors affecting secondary school students in Croatia by examining their negative experiences in the EFL classroom. A qualitative study was conducted on a sample of 140 students from three different secondary schools in Split- Dalmatia County. The instrument used to collect the data was a writing task (an essay). The results of the present study were compared to the findings of previous studies, confirming the teacher’s role as one of the dominant demotivating influences in L2 learning.
Abstract (croatian)
Unatoč činjenici da je neuspjeh pri učenju jezika česta pojava u obrazovanju, demotivacija u učenju stranog jezika se još uvijek smatra prilično neistraženim područjem. Cilj ovog rada bio je istražiti faktore demotivacije koji utječu na učenike srednjih škola u Hrvatskoj analizirajući njihova negativna iskustva pri učenju engleskog jezika. Provedeno je kvalitativno istraživanje na uzorku od 140 učenika triju srednjih škola s područja Splitsko-dalmatinske županije. Instrument korišten za prikupljanje podataka bio je pisani zadatak u formi eseja. Rezultati su uspoređeni s rezultatima prethodnih istraživanja, te su potvrdili ulogu nastavnika kao jednog od najdominantnijih utjecaja na demotivaciju u učenju stranog jezika.
