This thesis deals with Stories for the Years, written by Luigi Pirandello, winner of the Nobel Prize and one of the most eminent writers of all times. In the analysis of the 27 choses novellas the emphasis is placed on fashion which in this context represents a paradigm of liberation from the form, one of the two key concepts of the authorʼs philosophy, introduced and elaborated in his famous essay from the 1908, On Humor. Such a conclusion has been reached after a thorough analysis not only of the novellas in question, but also of the historical ‒ cultural context of the period and of various past and present fashion theories and philosophical thoughts. While some characters of the novellas accept to identify themselves with the mask imposed by social expectations, some other characters succeed in freeing themselves from social chains and escaping from the form by refusing to wear their items of clothing. In the majority of the cases, the character who rebels against the social system must bear the consequences which are twofold in the Pirandellian world: suicide and / or insanity. However, there is also a particular type of a character in the novellas – a thinker or a raisonneur who, thanks to great perspicacity, manages to understand the true tragedy of an individual who is forced to adhere to social forms, offer resistance, but also overcome all the hardships that stand in their way and survive, become a master of their own fate and speak up against the ''enormous puppet show'' of which the whole world is a part of, which represents the didactic purpose of the writer given that a personal tragedy of a character represents a universal tragedy of the entire humanity which oftentimes chooses to obediently go along with playing their part on the stage of life by taking the easy route instead of making their own way and becoming the master of their own destiny
